Anya Sippen:Unlike the Rest
Most people may look at Anya Sippen and think she isn’t like most Hampton University students, and they would be right. She doesn’t talk like them, dress like them and what is most noticeable is she doesn’t look like them.
Although Sippen, a junior from Durham, N.C, differs a lot from the typical HU student, there are other things about her that allow her to relate to her peers.
Her friend, Alaya Boykin, a sophomore broadcast journalism major says “Of course Anya fits in on campus. She’s a very compassionate person and people can see that and like her.”
Coming into Hampton, Sippen was not a broadcast journalism major as she is now. Starting off as an art major only heightens one’s interests about Sippen and what she really wants to do in life.
Going from art to writing is not out of the ordinary, since they are both considered forms of expressions and Sippen says, “I always knew I loved to write. I loved writing so much that I wrote a six page paper on Math.” Although she finds writing to be something she loves, though she realized that structured writing is not her favorite thing.
Boykin also states “I see Anya using her journalism degree to be a radio personality or maybe publishing her own magazine, maybe a literary magazine.”
When talking about future writing, Sippen states, “I see myself writing for something like the New Yorker, which is a magazine, where I will be able to include my personality.”
Speaking with the bubbly red-head, one can understand why she would want all her work to reflect who she is. She says that it is hard for her to call it an interview when she can only ask two or three questions, when she always has so much to say. Calling her talkative wouldn’t be the right word, but passionate.
Sippen is very much a blooming journalist at the age of 20, but to perfect anything, one needs to have the passion to back up the talent and she has that. Sippen is so passionate about writing that she writes poetry and even started doing spoken word recently. Another word to describe Sippen would be gutsy, because to display your poetry, your overflow of personal emotions with total strangers, takes a lot of guts.
Sippen has started working towards perfecting her craft with writing for HU’s newspaper and on top of that, she has even started writing her memoir. While perfecting what she loves, one should began looking out for Anya Sippen, the passionate and gutsy journalist.
